When I arrived in Mogadiscio in July 1966 as a new Peace Corps Volunteer, I stayed at the Savoiya. I don’t know when the picture is from but it looked much like this in the mid-1960s. Being from California and having just stepped off the plane from New York via Rome, I thought I had entered a movie set for a Bogart production. The veranda had a lively coffee bar frequented by Italians and Somalis. The street in front, Via Roma ?, was a major thourghfare which led to the ocean with a waterfront coffee bar, Mariano’s, where many nights were spent relaxing in the ocean breeze. Across the street from the hotel was the Bar National, best gelato in Mog. Down the street perpendicular to VIa Roma one passed the Cathedral on the way to one of the cinemas, name escapes me. Thanks for finding and posting the picture. My stay at the Savoiya was memorable.
